 | The Responsible Fishing Scheme was launched at Fishing 2006 by Seafish and has been developed to raise standards in the catching sector. The Responsible Fishing Scheme was created in response to the changing needs of the seafood supply chain and marketplace. It allows fishermen to demonstrate a commitment to operating their vessels to the very highest standards.
| | The Scheme independently assesses and audits individual vessels against a specification drafted by the British Standards Institution (BSI) under guidance from the UK fishing industry. Vessels gaining this accreditation are recognised as having standards which reflect best practice in a number of areas:
- Fishing operations
- Vessel safety and maintenance
- Crew competence
- Environmental interactions
Scottish vessels from the pelagic, whitefish and shellfish sectors were instrumental in working with Seafish to bring the Scheme into operation. Since its launch, we have seen a steady stream of Scottish boats going through the accreditation process.
It is hoped that our industry will promote this as a standard of responsible and committed operation, which could form a source of preferred supply for Scottish seafood.
