The Stornoway langoustine fishery has entered full assessment against
the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) standard for sustainable and
well managed fisheries. The fishery, which is being sponsored through
its assessment by Young’s, supplies the market with live langoustine
and tails for scampi production. The process is expected to take 12-14
months to complete and if successful, will result in products from this
fishery sporting the MSC label.
Young’s has partnered the Stornoway fleet in a number of projects over
the past five years, including the development of new ‘boat to plate’
traceability technology called Young’s Trace. This system gives the
company exact information on where and how its langoustine is caught,
and about its passage right to the processing unit. The data has also
proved invaluable in pinpointing the best fishing areas, and in helping
to reduce the catch of juvenile langoustines, which in turn helps to
make the fishery sustainable. Gaining MSC certification will enable the
fishery to publicly demonstrate this achievement.
