Ground-breaking work by fisheries scientist Dr Chevonne Laurenson at the North Atlantic Fisheries College (NAFC) enabled monkfish to be removed from the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) “Fish to Avoid” list in 2007, and also helped contribute to an increase in the monkfish quota for Scottish fishermen.

Dr Laurenson has tagged and studied over 200 monkfish around Shetland during the last 10 years and was able to provide robust scientific evidence of stock levels to the MCS.  Ongoing Industry/Science Partnership research shows that there has been a significant increase in Northern Stock abundance over the past five years, and that there are no biological indicators to suggest monkfish is being exploited at unsustainable levels.
