| Seafood Scotland was proud to present a celebratory bottle of Scotch to the 100th accredited vessel into the Seafish Responsible Fishing Scheme. Tommy Finn, of the Gleaner II, CN777; was the lucky skipper. Tommy said he was delighted to gain accreditation for his boat, and was particularly proud to have been the 100th vessel to gain entry into the Scheme. He also commented “It is a great opportunity to promote Scottish shellfish by raising standards across the board”. | | The Responsible Fishing Scheme was launched at Fishing 2006, and now has over 100 vessels around the UK fully accredited; with over 300 more registered and working towards the Scheme’s standard. The Award covers fishing practices, storage, handling, and traceability of the catch; crew competence; vessel criteria and environmental considerations such as the recovery of marine litter and effective control of discharges. Jess Sparks of Seafood Scotland said “In Scotland we have seen very good uptake of the Scheme from all sectors, we now have over 45 boats accredited. Over 20 of them are vessels targeting nephrops from both the east and west coast. In addition the Scottish pelagic fleet is committed to become fully accredited into the Responsible Fishing Scheme to compliment their drive for MSC accreditation of both North Sea herring and western part of the NE Atlantic mackerel fisheries”. | | Seafood Scotland provides accredited vessels with promotional labels to place on the catch, advertising their membership of the Scheme and helping to promote the Scheme to the wider supply chain.
