Scots Seafood Industry to feature on BBC Landward programme
Seafood Scotland (SFS) has collaborated closely with the BBC Landward programme to make five short snapshots of the Scottish seafood industry. These will be shown in the new series starting on September 11th.
The collaboration arose from a discussion with Nick Nairn at the Taste of Edinburgh festival, where SFS arranged for fisherman and President of the Scottish Fishermen's Federation Ian Gatt, to do a cookery demonstration alongside the celebrity chef and Landward presenter. Ian acts as a 'guide to industry' throughout the five programme strands.
Filming took place this week in Peterhead and Fraserburgh and included the fish market, whitefish, shellfish and pelagic vessels, Box Pool Solutions' box washing plant, Fresh Catch, SFO (Braehead), Whitelink and the Lighthouse Museum.
It kicked off with a kipper breakfast onboard the Quantus, where Nick Nairn learnt about the pelagic industry from skipper Mark Buchan and Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group Director Derek Duthie.
Onboard the new shellfish trawler Ellorah, Nick was treated to a feed of freshly caught langoustines from skippers Graeme Buchan and Graeme Smart and said he was 'very impressed with the taste'!

"I am really pleased to have the opportunity to demystify the seafood industry for the public, who don't have a good enough understanding of the issues involved in getting seafood from the ocean to the plate," explained Nick Nairn. "I am passionate about eating seafood and I have seen some fantastic high quality fish and shellfish over the past few days, so it is really frustrating to learn that much of it is exported while we import inferior quality products because they are cheaper. There is still work to be done to promote Scottish seafood to the public and to build on the valuable work of the Government and Seafood Scotland in encouraging people to 'eat more fish'!" he added.
