Seafood on show at Showcasing Scotland event
Seafood Scotland recently attended the Showcasing Scotland event, which ran from 7-9 October at Gleneagles. Seafood Scotland provided support to the seafood companies in attendance and also managed an experiential trip to the East coast.
Coordinated by SDI and Scotland Food and Drink the event saw over 1,200 individual meetings taking place, between 150 UK and International buyers and 100 of Scotland’s top food and drink businesses. International buyers in attendance ranged from as far afield as Hong Kong, China, the Middle East, Japan, USA and South East Asia, Europe in addition to those travelling from across the UK to attend. Companies attending last year’s event forecast almost £20 million of additional sales as a direct result of taking part; it is predicted that this year’s event will surpass those impressive figures.
The experiential trip, hosted by Seafood Scotland, included 10 buyers from the UK, China, Thailand, Kuwait and across Europe. Michael Bruce, a langoustine skipper, John Hogan and Tom McKenzie of the FMA Pittenweem, met the group and gave them a first-hand account of the East coast fishing industry. The buyers also got to see live crab and lobster being landed on the harbour.
The trip included a visit to the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther with a crab dressing demonstration from Jim Knox of the Fisherman’s Larder. The feedback from the event was extremely positive with buyers’ enthusiasm apparent as they snapped pictures and quizzed the industry.
A number of additional seafood supply enquiries on both an international and UK basis were also taken by Seafood Scotland and passed to the wider industry following the event.
One very satisfied Scottish supplier who attended the event, said:
‘I would also like to add that in all my years of selling, the 48 hours I spent at Gleneagles were not only the most productive but the most enjoyable too. A great combination and a great reflection for Scotland. Well done to everyone concerned.’
