glasgowunicrestDEEB carries out research on a wide range of both animal and plant species. There are five Research Groups in the Division; two are based around specific types of organism, including fish, and the remaining three around biological concepts and approaches. The quality of biological science research carried out by the department ranks as some of the best in the UK.

The study of aquatic organisms forms an important area of biological research because of their abundance, diversity and economic significance. DEEB is well-placed for both field and laboratory-based research and has strong links with the University Marine Biological Station at Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae. The Division has a broad range of research projects and has amongst many others carried out some interesting research into various subjects which can have a positive impact on the Scottish seafood industry.

This includes projects on langoustine, investigating methods to improve the flesh quality of harvested animals through modification of capture and storage practices and examining the impact of a destructive parasite on Nephrops populations. Much of this work is being carried out with industrial partners, including Young's Seafood Ltd and Scotprime. Additional research has examined nerve-muscle interactions in crustaceans and attack and escape strategies in aquatic predator-prey interactions. Work of the Division has also studied salmonids, and other farmed species, including extensive collaboration with the aquaculture industry, in investigating natural feeding rhythms, finding ways to predict the onset of sexual maturity, and devising ways to minimise aggression and stress in farmed fish.

Glasgow University also has a dedicated langoustine research facility which you can access by clicking here.
