Aberdeen Schoolchildren to check out local seafood industry
Eight children from Year Three of St Machar Academy, Aberdeen, will take a new look at their local seafood industry on June 1st, as part of a local food project organised by the Aberdeen based Reading Bus.
The pupils will visit International Fish Canners' facility in Fraserburgh to see fish smoking and canning, and will also take part in a tasting session and discussion about the health benefits of eating seafood, with food technologist Andrea Whyte. "Children in Nordic countries eat a great deal of oil-rich seafood such as herring and mackerel, which our company specialises in, and we are happy to encourage greater consumption by children in Scotland," explained MD Michael Clark.
As part of the trip, Seafood Scotland has organised for the pupils to visit a pelagic fishing vessel, the Kings Cross, where owner Alex Wiseman will talk about his life as a fisherman and demonstrate how fish are caught and stored onboard the boat.
The children will also sing a song on the deck of the Kings Cross to celebrate the area's links with the sea. It has been specially written by local singer and presenter Fiona Kennedy, who will join the children onboard.
Jenny Watson from the Reading Bus says the pupils are very excited by the prospect of their day out. "As part of their project, they are spearheading their own marketing campaign for a fantastic recipe book for children entitled 'Fit's for Supper?' The book is full of simple recipes to encourage youngsters to have a go at cooking. The recipes are complemented by vibrant and often humorous illustrations by renowned cartoonist, Bob Dewar. The book is being published by The Reading Bus with support from Tesco, and will be launched at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh in June," she said.
