Conservation Gear Technology

There are many types of fishing gear and methods used to capture fish. The efficiency of each gear type is influenced by its design and construction, and how, when and where it is fished. This means that there are many variables that can be changed to influence the catch composition of any fishing gear. Conservation gear engineering and the development of technical conservation measures (TCMs) are effective tools for reducing by-catch and subsequent wastage. Over many years, Seafish has worked closely fishermen from the Scottish fleet and many UK net manufacturers, to study and improve gear efficiency and selectivity.
