EU list of notified countries |
|
The current list is dated 17 March 2010. At this date 84 third countries had notified the Commission of their Competent Authorities. However there are still 10 countries that export a significant volume of seafood (this includes wild capture, aquaculture, fresh water, ambient and live) to the UK who have not yet notified the Commission of their Competent Authority and have not received approval for exporting to the UK. Of particular note is Bangladesh (£34m). Of these 10 countries, four have notified the Commission that they do not have sea- going fishing vessels under their flag catching fish for direct or indirect export to the EC, therefore they do not need to notify their Competent Authorities to the Commission. The Commission has stated that for countries that notified before 1 January 2010, the effective date of their notification is 1 January 2010. For countries that notified their Competent Authorities after 1 January 2010, the date in brackets next to the name of the country refers to the date the notification was accepted by the Commission. Only catches made from that date are authorised to be imported into the EC, when accompanied by a valid catch certificate. Russia was very late (19 February 2010) in submitting notification of their Competent Authorities to the European Commission, as were Belize (17 March), Cuba (24 Feb), Egypt (12 Feb), Netherland Antilles (12 Feb), Panama (3 Feb), Papua New Guinea (4 Feb) and Yemen (4 Feb). The Commission has clearly stated that notifications cannot be applied retrospectively so it is important that importers take careful notice of voyage dates to ensure they know the date of the catch for imports from these countries. Bilateral agreements have been reached with the Faroe Islands, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Norway and Iceland.
