The Scottish seafood industry harvests over 365 thousand tonnes of fish and shellfish a year, with a value in excess of £465 million. An economically profitable and sustainable industry is seen as essential to maintain Scotland’s place as a premium producer of some of the finest seafood in the world.
Our industry believes that sustainable fishing and management of our fisheries provides a strong and robust industry which will go on producing valuable seafood today, and for many future generations. Sustainable and responsible fishing, together with a transparent supply chain provides positive recognition and confidence from businesses and consumers alike to consume and enjoy Scottish seafood.
Our industry has been quick to seek the benefits of sustainable certification programmes to demonstrate these credentials to businesses and consumers in the UK, Europe and across the world. As such it has engaged several Scottish fisheries in the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) sustainable certification programme.
The MSC is a global, non-profit organisation which has developed a sustainable fishery certification program to contribute to the health of the world’s oceans by recognising and rewarding sustainable fishing practices. Thus helping to safeguard the supply of seafood as world pressures on seafood production continue to increase. For more information about MSC click here
The Loch Torridon nephrops creel fishery was the first Scottish fishery to be certified as sustainable to the MSC standard, in January 2003.
